On August 24th, Governor Deal announced that Republican leaders in the House and Senate have decided not to move forward with a date change for the 2012 transportation referendum during the special session. Last week, the House Transportation Committee favorably reported House Bill 3EX which would change the date of the upcoming transportation referendum from July 31st to November 6th. Many state and regional leaders believe changing the date will increase voter turnout and help the referendum pass. While the issue will not be addressed during the special session, the transportation referendum date change can still be taken up during the 2012 legislative session starting in January. In 2012, voters will have the opportunity to vote for a 1% regional sales tax to help fund regional transportation projects over 10 years. You can learn more at the link below.
