Permit Reform Joint Work Session

The Community Development/Human Resources and Finance Committees held a joint work session on the proposed permitting process legislation on September 22nd.  City Council members learned more about the background of the legislation and what the legislation is intended to do from Mayor Reed’s Senior Policy Advisor David Bennett, Permitting Task Force member Steve Roos and from Office of Buildings Director Don Rosenthal.  The legislation proposed is intended to improve the permit process, focus on customer service and maximize efficiency within the Office of Buildings.

  • Consolidate all permitting functions under one entity improving Atlanta’s Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating.
  • Train staff in International Code Council standards where they will receive $2000 for each certification that is received and maintained.
  • Establish an Enterprise Fund and permit fee structure to support the improved permitting process and maintain training within the division.

Council members, staff and other stakeholders in the development community were present at the work session to provide testimony and support the legislation.  Another joint work session is expected to be scheduled in the next couple of weeks.  You can read Don’s joint work session presentation here.
