No Agreement Between City of Cumming and Forsyth County Regarding Water

An $11.4 million water bill from Cumming to Forsyth County is one of several issues the city and county must work out before their current water contract expires in May.  Forsyth County owes Cumming this bill to pay for their chare of a new water intake facility at Lake Lanier.  If a resolution is not reached on the bundle of issues that accompany this agreement, then Cumming will be allowed to charge the 47,000 people that rely on the county any price they would like if they chose to continue service to these customers.  Disagreement between the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is causing a roadblock for Forysth County to enter negotiations with Cumming.

Forsyth County receives 12.2 million gallons of water per day from the intake facility.  Forsyth’s options are slim since the ongoing litigation with Alabama and Florida for the rights to Lake Lanier does not allow any more intake pipes to be built on the lake.  The full County Commission is expected to vote on this issue on April 5th at a public hearing.  City of Cumming Mayor Ford Gravitt stated the city does not plan to shut off access to water or increase prices if a deal is not reached.

The Annual Cumming Forsyth State of the County event will take place on May 3rd at the Forsyth Conference Center.  The Council for Quality Growth is co-sponsoring this event with the Cumming Forsyth Chamber of Commerce.  Continue to check our website for more details.
