Local Governments Awarded Water Supply Loans through Governor’s Water Supply Program

Nearly 18 months after Governor Deal instructed the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) to begin the Governors Water Supply Program (GWSP), the first round of projects and loans were approved for almost $100 million out of the $300 million committed to the program.  The GWSP was created in order to use state resources to help local governments develop new sources of water supply to meet the growing demands placed onGeorgia’s water infrastructure.  GEFA, along with the Water Supply Task Force and the Department of Community Affairs, reviewed 15 applications, seeking $195 million dollars in funding for their projects, eventually settling on 8 local projects.   The projects included water reservoir enhancement, construction of new water supply wells and towers, construction of water treatment infrastructure and construction of new water reservoirs.  Local governments will have the opportunity to apply again in January 2013 and January 2014.
