City of Atlanta Roundtable with Councilmember Dustin Hillis, District 9, Atlanta City Council

City of Atlanta Roundtable Recap
February 7th, 2024
Speaker: Councilmember Dustin Hillis, District 9, Atlanta City Council

On Wednesday, February 7th, 2024, the Council for Quality Growth welcomed District 9’s Councilmember Dustin Hillis to the City of Atlanta Roundtable. Thank you Councilmember Hillis for your time, Russell Landscape for sponsoring, and Selig Enterprises for hosting the meeting.

Below are five primary takeaways from Councilmember Hillis’ discussion:

  • Public Safety: the Public Safety Training Center is moving forward with a December ribbon-cutting, District 9 precincts are being rebuilt, and there are orders for hundreds of new police cars (with a take-home policy), though technology outfitters face a backlog. While car thefts have doubled (Kia, Hyundai), violent crime declined 20% in 2023.
  • Transportation: Commissioner Caviness is the leader Atlanta transportation has needed. He is aggressively hiring, activating and delivering projects, increasing funding for maintenance and resurfacing, and supporting the expansion of trail systems.
  • Utilities: solid waste fees are supposed to self-sustain but currently receive $5-10mm from the general fund annually. These fees need to be updated.
  • Finance: discussed budget sessions, pensions, and the surplus, and proposed an increase in the millage rate for the Parks Improvement Fund, potentially doubling the current amount with an additional $16 million in new funds.
  • World Cup: discussed logistics, safety, branding, and the need for infrastructure improvements.
