When the polls closed on Tuesday night, 54% of residents in Brookhaven said YES to incorporation, much to the chagrin of DeKalb County commissioners, who must now fill a $25 million dollar gap in the county budget. Advocates of incorporation believe that Brookhaven will provide more efficient services in police, zoning, parks and road maintenance at a lower cost than currently provided by DeKalb County. Brookhaven, with 50,000 residents, is now ranked in the top 20 for city population size in Georgia. Brookhaven is the most recent city to incorporate in the last decade, following cities such as Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, John’s Creek andMilton.
