Gwinnett Advisory Roundtable Recap
September 5, 2023
Speaker: Congressman Andrew Clyde
On Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, The Council was honored to host U.S. Representative Andrew Clyde as our guest speaker for a special Gwinnett County Advisory Roundtable. Thank you Congressman Clyde for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us.
Representing fourteen counties in Northeast Georgia, Congressman Clyde’s 9th district was recently expanded into part of Gwinnett County. Suwanee, Buford, and parts of Lawrenceville were included in the change.
His big-picture focus is to decrease spending by the U.S. government. As a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, Congressman Clyde works with agencies for Commerce, Justice, and Science, Labor and Health Services, and the Legislative Branch. According to the congressman, effective spending cuts can be unharmful to Americans in the near-term while repairing our nation’s financial health over the long-term.
Congressman Clyde has introduced some critical bills to Congress focused on citizen safety. His H.J.Res.26, which re-instated penalties for violent criminal offenses, was passed with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Biden. His H.J.Res.42, aiming to overturn the 2022 requirement for mandatory police body-camera footage, was also passed with bipartisan support but vetoed by President Biden. Lastly, his H.J.Res.44, currently in process at the Senate, seeks to overturn the Administration’s ban on pistol braces.
Other changes important to Clyde include: the Jefferson Motion to vacate the chair, single-subject bills, 72 hours advance notice to read legislation before a vote, and a vote on term limits.
