The Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority announced on July 1, 2010 that the name of the agency had officially been changed to the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority. The name change was pursued in order to more accurately portray the role that GEFA plays in infrastructure investment. The name change was the result of legislation introduced in the GA General Assembly in 2009 and passed in 2010.
